Saturday: I had to get up early, but it was not easy. The weather was good though. I went to Uni to finish up some firewall configuration. “Set up a head office and two branch offices and let them communicate via IPSec tunnels” G – R – E – A – T – !
I spend s i x hours configuring those Firebox machines… SIX hours… Windows… well, at the end it all worked -sort of- and we found some dead hardware… a hub, a serial port, one port on another hub, and those typos, the manual wasn’t any good either… of course the sun was gone, when I got the hell out of there. crap.
Oh well, back to work.

Well, am I keeping right track on the weeks here? It feels like week thirteen…

Two records for today:

I took a look at the UC “super computer”. It is supposed to be the fastest computer in Australasia.

The UCSC system is comprised of two systems. The first is a tightly-coupled, high-performance computer system composed of ten of IBM’s p5-575 high-end compute nodes. The second is a two rack Blue Gene system with 4096 compute nodes.

Each p5-575 node contains 16 IBM Power 5 processors with 1,9 GHz and 32 GB of Ram, together 160 CPUs. The 4096 processors in the other system run at 700 MHz with 512 MB ram for each (two?) CPUs.

Well you know, here at the UoC they charge students for research on the Internet. Here is a little statistic. The first month I was short on money, so I only used the Internet very little.

1st month:
Internet charge: $3.79
Fixed fee: $23.00
Sums up to: $26.79

1st week of 2nd month:
Internet charge: $3.18
Fixed fee: $15.00
Sums up to: $18.18

So, for having Internet at my flat, I have to pay the IT-Department a monthly fee to have my Ethernet-box connected. I chose the 100MB connection, because I wasn’t aware that it is more expensive than the 10MB connection. Additionally I had to pay an administration fee in the first month. This money goes to the IT-Department of the University of Canterbury.
But the Halls of Residence charged me another Telephone and Data Connection fee of $120! — for their side of the connection…
…and no operating system updates in this time :-/

Es gibt ein Lied von Spliff, dass sehr empfehlenswert ist. Habe es leider nur auf Platte, falls mal jemand ueber eine digitale Version stolpern sollte, so waere ich dankbar ueber eine kleine Notiz.

I am going nuts. Thats what I thought, while the software system at the University of Canterbury did not what it was supposed to do. At the end, they had to fix something manually. But finally I am enrolled. I spent about four hours of running around at the campus during this International Enrollment Day. From the Science Lecture Hall to the College of Science (whoops wrong there) to the Department of Computer Science to the Registry. I didn’t want to stand in line for hours, so I asked someone to hold my spot — well he was gone when I came back… then they wanted to charge me the international fees (which would have been NZ$ 12.000+) and then they could not include the health insurance…. great. Computers rock!

Ich wohne hier in NZ ja die ersten zwei Wochen in einer temporaeren Unterkunft am Rande des Stadtkerns von Christchurch (klick1). Wie man sehen kann ist die im Sueden angrenzende Strasse Cambridge Ter. relativ breit. Was man nicht direkt sieht ist, dass diese idyllische Strasse normalerweise recht wenig befahren ist. Normalerweise.

Prima, dass die Autos hier fuer ein Appel und nen Ei zu haben sind. Und die Autos bleiben so lange auf der Strasse, wie sie einigermassen strassentauglich sind.

Gestern haben hier jedenfalls ein paar Kiddies ein paar Beschleunigungstest und wer-faehrt-am-schnellsten-um-den-Block-Rennen geliefert… Nitro incl. Denn dafuer eignet sich die gerade Strecke der Strasse wo ich wohne ganz besonders gut… und es war laut!
Naja, das passiert hier regelmaessig, etwa einmal die Woche gehts richtig rund. Beim naechsten mal Hot Pursuite oder Counter Strike?

Es ist auch schon vorgekommen, dass einfach ein paar Leute umgefahren werden — bei einer Party um die Ecke. Aus Spass. Toll.

Das Fahrradfahren hier gefaehrlich sein soll, habe ich bereits erwaehnt, oder? Wie sieht es mit den ganzen Markierungen auf der Strasse aus, die dort von Unfaellen zurueckgeblieben sind? Es sind viele…

Es gibt tausend gute Gründe sich keinen Mac zu kaufen:

Grund Nummer eins: Nur ein Jahr Garantie!

Man kann 2000 Euro für ein hochwertiges Notebook hinblättern — wenn es nach 13 Monaten abraucht oder auch nur das Logic Board aufgibt, dann ist Schicht im Schacht… die drei Jahre Garantie Option muss man sich teuer erkaufen — bei anderen Anbietern gibt es die inklusive!

Ich liebe meinen Mac trotzdem ;-)

Nachdem ich es mit dem Bashscripten etwas übertrieben habe, funktionierte das Apple OSX Terminal nicht mehr. Dies war nicht weiter tragisch, da ich das X11 Terminal gefallen lernte. Jedoch fand ich keine Möglichkeit dem OSX Frontend von GnuPG beizubringen X11 zu verwenden…
Falls ihr mal Probleme mit dem Apple Terminal habt, aber darauf angewiesen seid, dann könnt ihr probieren die Einstellungsdatei zu löschen:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Terminal.plist vorher selbstverständlich eine Sicherung anlegen!
